A 2021 Coil Question: Size vs. Ohms

Posted by David on

When it comes to vaping, every component of your setup plays an enormous role in the quality of your experience. You must have the proper device, a compatible coil, and the correct e-liquid type, otherwise you’re not going to have the vaping experience that you want.

We know that today’s coils are more diverse and advanced than ever before. Because there is such a wide array of vaping devices on the market, the industry has to provide a massive selection of coils so that each user can find their sweet spot regardless of the device that they’re using.

There are two things that make each coil unique, and they are size and resistance level. Both of these factors determine whether or not a coil is going to be compatible with your device as well as your unique vaping preferences. However, at the end of the day, it’s the resistance level that determines whether or not a coil can handle the demands of your device, which is why you must pay special attention to the ohms.

What Matters More: Size or Ohms?

Many people wonder whether the size of a coil or its resistance level matters more. Allow us to break down the importance of each one to answer your question thoroughly.

Ohms

A coil’s resistance level is measured in ohms, as an ohm is a single measurement of electrical resistance. Ohms, voltage, current, and wattage are directly connected to each other, which means that your vaping setup’s voltage, current and wattage determine how many ohms your coil should be. Therefore, it’s crucial that you purchase a coil based on the resistance level rather than the size to ensure that it’s compatible with your device’s needs.

Size

While it’s more important to pay attention to the resistance level of a coil when choosing one for your device, size is important as well. There are lots of different types of tanks on the market, and a coil’s size reflects which type of tank it will fit into. For instance, a sub-ohm tank requires a large, cylindrical coil. Meanwhile, a pod cartridge requires a small, slim coil.

Choosing the Right Coil According to Size

First, let’s get into choosing the right coil based on its size. This is a fairly easy thing to do, especially since most tank and pod cartridge manufacturers make coils that are specifically designed to fit into their tanks. First, determine which type of atomizer you have. If it’s a sub-ohm or standard tank, you’ll need a larger coil. If it’s a pod cartridge that goes with a pod mod, you’ll need a small coil that’s specially designed for this type of hardware.

Choosing the Right Coil According to Ohms

This is where things get a little trickier. Each vaping system has its own wattage range, and each wattage range has its own compatible resistance level. So, you must determine the wattage range that you’ll be sticking to while you vape, and then you must choose a coil that’s specially created for that wattage range. Each resistance level is made for a certain wattage range, and you can determine that wattage range by simply looking at the label on the package of coils.

You can also use Ohm’s Law and Joule’s Law to determine what resistance level is right for you. These are two scientific laws that take into account current, voltage and wattage in order to determine the proper number of ohms.

Other Things to Keep in Mind

As you can now see, both size and resistance level matter tremendously when it comes to choosing the right coil for your vaping setup, although resistance level matters a bit more because it’s far more specific. However, there are other things to take into account as well.

  • 1.We always recommend going with high-quality coils that are made by a brand that you trust. Cheap coils won’t last very long, and they may even be harmful to your device.
  • 2.You must keep both size and resistance level in mind if you plan on building your own coils. When it comes to being a DIY vaper, you must pay careful attention to these attributes as one small mistake can render a coil useless.
  • 3.If you want to make your own coils, we recommend doing a lot of research beforehand so that you can build them according to the demands of your unique setup.
