Why Does It Take Longer to Go Through Nic Salt E-Liquids?

Posted by David on

Most vapers have found that their vaping lives have improved dramatically after switching to nicotine salt e-liquids and pod mods that are compatible with them. Among other things, this switch can save you money, help you experience a more satisfying nicotine experience and make life easier thanks to the simpler, more user-friendly nature of this vaping setup.

Another benefit that doesn’t get talked about as much is the fact that most vapers find that after switching from freebase to salt-based nicotine e-liquid, their bottles last longer. Besides the fact that salt nic juice tends to be cheaper in price than its freebase counterpart, it just seems to last longer. Needless to say, this is a welcome change to those who are tired of splurging on big juice bottles by the week.

So, why does this type of juice seem to last longer? There are actually quite a few reasons, as you’ll soon discover.

Basic Difference Between Freebase and Salt-Based

Before we explain why salt nic e-liquid seems to last longer, it’s crucial that we briefly explain how the two types of nicotine differ. This will help you better understand what it is about this type that makes it seem to have more longevity.

Freebase is a type of nicotine that was created in the 1950s. It was produced by cigarette companies by taking nicotine molecules from the tobacco plant and chemically modifying them to make the nicotine more potent, and, thus, more addictive.

Now, when consumed in the form of a cigarette, freebase feels fine. But, when combined with an e-liquid formula and heated by a coil, that freebase nicotine can produce a very harsh sensation along the throat. For this reason, e-juices utilized in sub-ohm mods tend to have a low nicotine content to avoid that harsh feeling.

Then, nicotine salts arrived and changed the vaping world forever. This type of nicotine is taken from the tobacco plant and blended with benzoic acid, which allows it to be potent without being harsh. Intended for low-wattage devices in order to deliver a serious punch at a low output level.

Why it Takes Longer to Go Through Salt-Based Vape Juices

Now that you know how these two types of nicotine differ, let’s explore the many ways in which vaping a salt-based vape juice allows you to go through liquid at a slower pace.

VG/PG Ratio

High VG e-liquids are thicker in consistency because vegetable glycerin is a highly viscous ingredient. Meanwhile, PG is relatively thin. You’ll go through high VG juices quicker because there’s less volume. Freebase e-liquids are most popular in high VG formulas, while salt nic e-liquids have 50/50 blends. So, because there’s less VG in salt-based juices, they’ll last a little longer.

Nicotine Content

Like we said, nicotine salts allow you to enjoy a stronger hit of nicotine with every puff. If you’re vaping primarily to satisfy your nicotine cravings, you’ll find that it takes fewer puffs to take care of your needs, and, thus, less juice overall. Pretty simple, right?

Device You’re Using

As we said, pod mods are low-wattage devices that don’t utilize a whole lot of power. Meanwhile, the sub-ohm setups that are compatible with freebase e-juice are high-wattage setups that use a lot of power.

The more powerful your device, the more e-liquid will be turned into vapor each time you take a hit. Because pod mods utilize low wattage levels, you’re just not burning through nearly as much juice when you take a pull.

Coils

Sub-ohm coils use more liquid than the coils that come in pod cartridges. That’s because in order to get that nice, big hit of vapor with a sub-ohm device, the coil must absorb a lot of e-liquid in its wick. Hence why these coils are bigger than pod coils.

With pod coils, only a little bit of liquid is needed to produce a hit. That’s why they’re so small, and why you don’t get nearly as much vapor but still enjoy a nice blast of nicotine.

Motivation Behind Vaping

The reason why you’re vaping in the first place may have to do with how much e-liquid you go through. If you’re a cloud-chaser above all else, you’ll go through a lot more e-liquid than someone who just wants a hit of nicotine here and there.

Enjoy that Nicotine as well as Those Savings!

There are many reasons why e-liquids made with salt-based nicotine last longer than those that contain freebase nicotine. All of these reasons add up, which means that it’s almost a given that you’ll spend less money on juice over time.
