Why is Moisture Bad for Pre-Rolls?
Posted by
onA growing trend in the hemp community is pre-rolls, which offer a convenient, potent, fast-acting and highly bioavailable means for getting one’s daily dose of cannabidiol, while providing a naturally full spectrum experience complete with a diverse array of cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids that work together to produce a well-rounded hemp experience.
Today, you can find an impressive array of pre-rolls on the market, which makes it easier than ever before to find the ideal product for your particular goals. But, once you have pre-rolls in your possession, you need to store them correctly, or else they won’t be usable after a certain point. Hence, protecting them from moisture is crucial as you’ll soon find out.
What are Pre-Rolls?
First, allow us to explain what pre-rolls are, for those who still aren’t sure.
Pre-rolls are simply the broken up buds of the hemp plant rolled up in paper, as the buds that naturally occur on the plant are where we source all of our CBD along with other cannabinoids, terpenes and additional desirable compounds. The raw buds of hemp are possibly the most bioavailable form that exists, as they have not been tampered with in any way or exposed to specific temperatures and purification techniques that can subtly destabilize the compounds.
Pre-rolls are similar to cigarettes, except they do not contain any tobacco whatsoever, and contain only raw, pure hemp. They may or may not be filtered and come in a wide variety of sizes.
Many people enjoy pre-rolls because of how convenient they are. Buying the raw buds of hemp loose allows for a more versatile product, but not everyone wants to put effort into manually breaking up the buds to insert into a pipe, vaporizer or rolling paper. These products arrive in a way that allows you to simply take a pre-roll out of the package, light it up and smoke your hemp without any effort.
Moisture and Pre-Rolls: A Bad Combination
So, why is moisture so potentially bad for pre-rolls?
Well, pre-rolls contain organic material. Moisture can cause mold or mildew to develop on organic material. Smoking mold or mildew can lead to negative respiratory effects, which is why it should be avoided at all costs. Because pre-rolls conceal the actual hemp buds, it can be hard to know that there is mold or mildew growing in the product, which is why your best bet is to simply store your pre-rolls away from humid environments.
Why Absolute Dryness is Not Ideal Either
It’s important to point out that complete dryness is not ideal either, as this can dehydrate the trichomes of the buds, which are compound-rich glands that need to maintain some level of moisture in order to keep those compounds active.
How to Properly Store Your Pre-Rolls to Keep Them Fresh
Now, we can talk about how to safely store pre-rolls to ensure that they don’t develop mildew or mold and maintain their high levels of bioavailable compounds in general.
#1: Choose an Area Away from Humidity
Of course, you need to keep your product away from high humidity. Areas in your home that are prone to high humidity are your bathroom and kitchen, where steam is common.
#2: Don’t Store Your Pre-Rolls Close to a Heating or Cooling Vent
We said that excessive dryness can also damage the product, so do not store your pre-rolls next to a heating or cooling vent, where excessively dry air is constantly being blown.
#3: Select a Dark Place
Darkness is ideal for hemp, because bright lights can degrade the compounds by boosting the oxidization process. Choose a dark area like a closet or cabinet.
#4: Make Sure the Area is Relatively Cool
High heat can also cause the compounds to degrade more quickly, so find a cooler area in your home, which again may be a closet or cabinet.
#5: Use in the Order of Purchase
Finally, make sure that you use your pre-rolls in the order that you purchased them so that you never have a product that’s been sitting around for too long.
Keep On Rolling with Your Pre-Rolls
Pre-rolls can provide enormous satisfaction, but too much moisture can destroy them and make them unhealthy to smoke. Storing your pre-rolls properly is critical if you want to keep your product safe and effective.
