A Revisited Vaping Question: Why Do Most Freebase E-Juices Vape Faster Than Salt-Based Juices?

Posted by David on

If you enjoy vaping freebase and salt-based nicotine e-juices, you know that both vape styles are radically different from the former in a variety of ways. As you know, nic salts are used with pod mod systems, as these devices are a far cry from the large and fairly complicated box mod setups.

One thing that many vapers notice after switching to salt nic vaping is that they seem to go through juice far less frequently. This, of course, is a welcome change as it can help a user save a good deal of money over time. But what is it exactly about this style of vaping that makes e-liquid last longer?

Key Difference

As you know, salt nic e-liquid contains nicotine salts, while freebase nic e-liquid is made with freebase nicotine. Nicotine salts, also known as salt-based nicotine, is a type of nicotine that is extracted from the tobacco leaf and combined with a substance called benzoic acid that increases the nicotine’s stability. This allows users to enjoy a stronger hit of nicotine without experiencing the harshness that’s associated with freebase nicotine, which is a chemically modified form of nicotine invented by tobacco companies decades ago.

Reasons for Such Quickness

If you’ve noticed that you go through vape juice much more slowly now that you’ve switched to pod-based vaping, you’re not imagining it. We will be explaining the many reasons why this is the case.

Reason #1: Lower Wattage Levels

Box mod systems operate at high wattage levels so that the user can enjoy a nice amount of vapor with every puff. One reason why vapers do enjoy the high volume of vapor that’s possible with these high-wattage systems is because it makes up for the fact that they can’t enjoy high nicotine levels due to the harshness of freebase nicotine.

But with nicotine salts, we can enjoy a high amount of nicotine while using a low-wattage system. And the lower the wattage, the less e-liquid is turned into vapor per puff. Therefore, your low-wattage system is preventing you from running through a good amount of vape juice each time you fire a hit.

Reason #2: More Nicotine Satisfaction Per Puff

Another reason why nic salt e-juices lasts longer is because it satisfies users’ needs more effectively. Most people who vape are former cigarette smokers who are looking for a quick and easy way to satisfy their nicotine cravings. Because of the harshness of freebase nicotine, users had to go with low-nicotine concentrations of freebase nic vape juices to use with their box mod setups. This meant that they had to take several hits in order to get the proper amount of nicotine into their system.

Now, with salt-based nicotine, users can get that pleasant dose of nicotine after just one or two hits. Therefore, most pod mod users are vaping less overall, which means that they are going through less e-liquid on a daily basis.

Reason #3: Less VG

Another thing to consider is the fact that salt-based vape juices tend to contain a base of 50 percent VG (vegetable glycerin) and 50 percent PG (propylene glycol), while freebase nic e-liquids frequently have extremely high levels of VG and relatively low levels of PG. This is because high VG vape juices are thicker in consistency which prevents them from burning when using a high-wattage box mod setup. Although, high VG e-liquids tend to produce far more vapor per pull than e-liquids that have a 50/50 base.

Reason #4: Different Coils

Lastly, remember that the coils found in pod cartridges are far different from the sub-ohm coils that you are used to. Sub-ohm coils contain large, thick cotton wicks that absorb a lot of vape juice so that each hit produces a massive amount of vapor. Pod mod coils contain wicks made of skinny fibers that absorb far less e-liquid. This results in going through less vape juice per hit.

Slowing it Down Just A Little

Clearly, there are several reasons why freebase e-liquid vapes quicker than its salt nic counterpart. If you’re trying to save money while you vape, salt nic e-liquids are the way to go. Most users are able to satisfy their nicotine cravings without going through a ton of vape juice in a day.
