Fact or Fiction: Making Your E-Liquid Supply Last Longer with Water

Posted by David on

We all know that e-liquids are made up of four basic ingredients: propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), flavoring, and [nicotine]. Together, these ingredients form a thick liquid that can be poured into a vape tank and heated by a coil in order to become rich and luscious vapor.

Because e-liquid is, well, a liquid, many vapers wonder from time to time what would happen if they were to add some water to their bottle. Would this throw off the consistency to the point that it couldn’t be vaped? Or, would it actually enhance certain aspects of their vaping experience? Good questions, as we’re gonna give you all of the info you need when it comes to adding water to your vape juice.

Why Would a Vaper Want to Add Water to Their E-Liquid in the First Place?

Before addressing whether or not water can be added to an e-liquid, it’s important to understand the reasons why a user may wish to add it in the first place.

Reason #1: Running Very Low on E-Juice

It’s happened to the best of us: Late at night, we go to refill our tank with vape juice. We grab our e-liquid bottle in order to start refilling, only to discover that we barely have enough e-juice left to provide even a couple of hits. We know that all of the vape shops in town are closed, and there’s no way we can get a new bottle shipped in time were we to order one online.

It’s understandable that in those moments, many vapers wonder if they can simply add a tiny bit of water to their e-liquid in order to stretch out their supply until they can go buy some more in the morning.

Reason #2: Too Strong of a Flavor

Another reason why a vaper may wish to add water to their vape juice is because the flavor is too strong. Often, we’ll try out a new e-liquid only to find that the flavor is overwhelming to our palate. Maybe it’s too sweet, or maybe a certain ingredient just isn’t agreeing with our taste buds.

It makes sense that a vaper would think that adding some water to their bottle would mellow out the flavor so that it can be enjoyed rather than thrown into the garbage. After all, who likes wasting money?

Reason #3: It’s Too Thick

The last reason why a vaper may wish to add water to their bottle is because their vape juice is too thick. Maybe they’re not a fan of high VG e-liquids, maybe they wish to mellow out those clouds or maybe it’s over-steeped to the point that it’s basically syrup. Either way, adding water would thin out the consistency.

Question on Everyone’s Mind: “Can You Add Water to E-Liquid?”

Essentially, yes, you can add water to your e-liquid. Of course, there’s a right and a wrong way to go about it. By doing it right, you’ll end up with exactly what you want, whether it’s a more mellow flavor, a thinner vape juice or simply just enough e-liquid to get you through the night. But, doing it incorrectly will leave you with e-juice that can’t be vaped at all.

How to Add Water to Your E-Liquid the Right Way

Now, even though adding water to your e-liquid can definitely be done, and potentially benefit your vaping experience in a variety of ways, you still need to know how to go about doing so properly.

Try to Go with High VG E-Liquids

Propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin make up the base of every vape juice. Vegetable glycerin is thick and viscous while propylene glycol is thin and loose. A vape juice can’t be too thick, or else it will clog the coil. And, if it’s too thin, the heat of the coil will burn it rather than allow it to become vapor that you can enjoy.

Water, of course, is a thin substance. Adding water to a high PG e-liquid will make a thin formula even thinner, which may leave you with a less than desirable vaping session. That’s why it’s believed that it’s always better to add water to a high VG vape juice. This type of vape juice is on the thicker side, so adding a little bit of water won’t throw off the consistency too much.

Distilled Water is a Must

If there’s one thing that you should take away from this article, it’s that you must use distilled water. Tap or filtered water will add minerals to your vape tank that can clog the coil. Also, it might not be great to inhale those minerals throughout the day. Luckily, distilled water is easily available and very inexpensive.

Be Careful with the Amount

If you’re going to add water to your vape juice, try to keep it to about five percent of the overall formula. Any more than that will make your vape juice far too watery to vape properly.

Give It a Shake

Once you add your water, shake the bottle so that everything is mixed together properly.

2 Extra Tips to Consider

By following this guide, you can ensure that you do add water to your e-liquid properly. Still, with that said, remember these two things.

Tip #1: Consider a Flavor Boost

If you want to thin out your e-liquid but don’t want to lose flavor, consider buying a flavor boost in order to add more flavor concentrate to your vape juice.

Tip #2: Keep Distilled Water in an Old E-Juice Bottle

To make it easy to add water to your e-liquid, consider pouring distilled water into an old e-juice bottle. This way, you can add water one drop at a time.
