How to Pick the Right Vape Tank

Posted by David on

When it comes to building your perfect vape setup, the vape tank you choose can make all the difference in your experience. It’s not just about looks: your tank controls airflow, flavor intensity, vapor production, and how often you’ll need to refill or change coils. Choosing the right vape tank can be overwhelming with all the options out there.

Understanding the Vape Tank

Before diving into specifics, let’s go over what a vape tank is. A vape tank is the part of your vape device that holds your e-liquid and houses the coil that heats the liquid into vapor. Vape tanks usually sit atop a mod or battery and are key to the flavor and performance of your vape. Different tanks are designed for different purposes—cloud chasing, flavor chasing, mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping, direct-to-lung (DTL) vaping, and more.

Key Considerations When Choosing a Vape Tank

Vaping Style: MTL vs DTL

Your vaping style is the first thing to consider.

  • Mouth-to-lung (MTL) tanks are ideal for those who prefer a tighter draw, similar to the sensation of smoking a cigarette. These tanks use higher-resistance coils and lower wattages. They’re usually used with high-nicotine e-liquids or nicotine salts.
  • Direct-to-lung (DTL) tanks offer a much looser draw and allow you to inhale directly into your lungs, producing bigger clouds and more intense flavor. DTL tanks require lower-resistance coils and higher wattages, so they pair best with mods that have more power and use thicker, lower-nicotine vape juice.

Make sure your tank supports the style of vaping you prefer, or you may end up with a frustrating experience.

Coil Compatibility

Every vape tank uses specific coils designed for that tank. Some tanks are versatile and allow for a wide variety of coil options, while others are more limited.

  • Sub-ohm coils (less than 1.0 ohm) are used in DTL tanks for large vapor production.
  • Above-ohm coils (1.0 ohm or more) are common in MTL tanks for stronger throat hits and slower consumption of e-liquid.

Look at the available coils for a tank before purchasing. Ask yourself: Are the coils readily available? Do they come in resistances that match your vaping style? How long do they last?

Tank Capacity and Refilling

Tank capacity impacts how often you’ll need to refill your vape juice. If you’re a heavy vaper, you’ll likely want a tank that holds 4mL or more. MTL vapers often get by with smaller tanks since they use less liquid per puff.

Also, consider the refilling method:

  • Top-fill tanks are the easiest and cleanest to refill. Most modern tanks fall into this category.
  • Bottom-fill tanks require removing the tank from your device and can be messier.

Some tanks have slide-to-fill tops or locking mechanisms to prevent leaks—convenient if you’re always on the go.

Airflow Control

Airflow greatly affects both vapor production and flavor intensity. Adjustable airflow allows you to tailor your vape to your exact preference.

  • Tighter airflow = warmer vapor and a stronger throat hit (ideal for MTL).
  • Looser airflow = cooler vapor and more cloud production (ideal for DTL).

Choose a tank with adjustable airflow so you can fine-tune your draw. Some high-end tanks even offer multiple airflow slots and precision rings for micro-adjustments.

Build Quality and Material

Most tanks are made from stainless steel and glass, but quality can vary widely. Look for tanks made by reputable brands with good reviews. A cheaply made tank may crack, leak, or struggle to maintain a proper seal.

Some tanks come with Pyrex glass or offer spare glass tubes, which is a nice bonus. Others may feature PCTG (a more impact-resistant plastic), but this can sometimes absorb flavors and discolor with use.

Rebuildable or Not?

There are two main categories of tanks:

  • Pre-built coil tanks (the most common) use disposable coil heads. Just unscrew the old coil and screw in a new one when needed.
  • Rebuildable tanks (RTAs, RDAs, RDTAs) are designed for advanced users who build their own coils and wicks.

Unless you’re experienced and enjoy tinkering, stick with a traditional tank that uses pre-made coils. But if you want maximum customization and performance, rebuildables are a rewarding path.

Bonus Tip: Match Your Tank to Your Mod

Not all tanks are compatible with every device. Before buying, check:

  • Threading: Most tanks use 510 threads, which are standard. Make sure your mod and tank both have 510 compatibility.
  • Wattage range: Your mod must support the power needs of the tank’s coils.
  • Size: Some larger tanks can overhang on smaller mods, affecting the look and feel.

If you're unsure, buy from a vape shop or website that lists compatibility or bundle deals.

Choosing the right vape tank is a personal decision that depends on your vaping habits, preferences, and experience level.

If you love chasing clouds and experimenting with flavors, a sub-ohm tank with massive airflow might be perfect. If you just  want a simple, satisfying hit, a tight-draw MTL tank with nicotine salts may be a better fit. Take your time, read reviews, and don't hesitate to ask for advice at a local vape shop or online. The right tank can take your vape experience from frustrating to fantastic.
